A complete guide to Copa América 2019

Guide for Copa América: The participating teams, the matches, where you can see the matches, the groups, and the best players.

One of the oldest soccer tournaments in the world

Copa America is the largest international football tournament in South America. The South American Football Confederation organizes it (CONMEBOL). 1916 is the first year of this tournament. It was held in Argentina to celebrate the anniversary of the independence of this country.

Brazil is the host of Copa América 2019 of CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation. This year, Japan and Qatar also participate as guests. Messi, Suarez, and James want to dethrone Chile that has won Copa América twice in a row (2015 and 2016).

First level football in the Copa América

European football, like LaLiga for example, is closed for vacations. So we have to cross the Atlantic to find some football excitement. And good football we’re going to find in the XLVI edition of the Copa América that starts in Brazil on Friday, June 14!
This South American tournament offers us the best football in the region with great players. It may seem a bit weird that Japan and Qatar also participate. It is because initially, the United States and Mexico were invited to participate, but both selections declined their participation. Therefore, to have 12 countries, Japan and Qatar were invited.
The double champion Chile hopes to defend their titles and win their third consecutive Copa América. They raised the desirable cup in 2015 (in Chile, in their country) and in 2016 (in the United States). But we ask ourselves, what is Copa America of CONMEBOL? Which teams participate in the tournament? And who are the favorites? We have compiled all the information you need about the Copa America.

When is the Copa América 2019 played?

The Copa América will take place between June 15 and July 7, 2019.

What is the format of the tournament?

Twelve teams are participating in the 46th edition of this tournament. By the way, it is one of the oldest soccer tournament in the world for national teams. All teams gets divided into three groups. The two best selections in each group go to the final stage. They also pass the two best third of the groups. These are the three groups in the Copa América in 2019:
Group A – Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru
Group B – Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar
Group C – Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, Chile

Where are the games played?

Brazil is the host, and the matches will take place at the stadiums below:
Maracanã Stadium – Rio de Janeiro (capacity 74,738 people)
Estádio do Morumbi – São Paulo (67,428)
Estádio Mineirão – Rio de Janeiro (58,170)
Arena do Grêmio – São Paulo (55,662)

Why are Japan and Qatar playing in the Copa América?

It is clear that they are not South American countries or belong to CONMEBOL … The explanation is this: When reducing the number of participating teams from 16 to 12, Conmebol decided at the beginning to invite the United States and Mexico. But both teams decided not to participate as they were more interested in the 2019 Gold Cup. Therefore, Conmebol decided to invite these countries from Asia and the Middle East: Qatar and Japan.

On which players should we look?

Giovani Lo Celso

Born in Rosario, Argentina, Giovani Lo Celso moved to Paris Saint-Germain when he was 20 years old, back in 2016. He has won the French League of Ligue 1 once and two Coupes de France with PSG. For now, he is Real Betis player in Seville, although there is a lot of talk of Tottenham wanting to sign him. Lo Celso has scored 16 goals in 45 games with Real Betis Balompié.

Eder Militao

This Brazilian of only 21 years has had a brilliant career. He played only one season with the Brazilian Sao Paulo before joining Porto in 2018. This right-back – or center back – will play for Real Madrid as of July 1, 2019. Eder Militao has only played four games for the Brazilian national team. But his  market value is a massive €50 million. This Copa América will be his chance to impress the world.

Renato Tapia

This midfielder from Peru is only 23 years old but has already played 40 matches with the national team. Apart from that, he has played 76 games in the Dutch league Eredivisie being a player of the teams FC Twente, Feyenoord and Willem II. The Incas made a good tournament in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but in the end, they did not pass the group stage. Renato Tapia played when Peru won 2-0 to Australia, Peru’s first victory in a Football World Cup since 1978.

Alfredo Morelos

Alfredo Morelos is Colombian but plays for the Scottish Glasgow Rangers. He is destined to create headlines with his Colombia in this Copa America. Morelos is 22 years old and has played three matches with the national team. He scored 18 goals in 30 games with Rangers, plus four goals in the Europa League. But he has to be careful with his temper: this Colombian goalscorer has seen five red cards during the season, a not so very fortunate record in Europe.

Lucas Torreira

Lucas Torreira is 23 years old and has played 16 games with his national team, Uruguay. He has made an impressive season at Arsenal in the English Premier League . He comes to Copa America to increase the number of trophies in his showcase. Born in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, this midfielder started his career in the Italian Serie A. He could have played with the Italian national team because his grandfather (on the father´s side) was Italian, but he chose to play with Los Charrúas. He debuted with the Uruguay national team in March 2018.

And of course, Leo Messi and some more stars

Apart from the players mentioned above, there are some more stars. The first, the macro-star Lionel Messi. For me, the best player in the history of football. Unfortunately, things do not usually go well when he plays for Argentina… But there are also other huge stars, such as Coutinho from Brazil, James from Colombia and Luis Suaréz plus Edison Cavani from Uruguay. Some players these ones eh…
