The story behind the Premier League

At the end of 1991, an agreement was signed between the main football clubs to establish a new league that was outside the English Football Association. The name became known as the FA Premier League. The reason for breaking out of the ordinary union was because they wanted to run the financial part themselves. Such as sponsorship agreements and television broadcasts and other sponsorships. Originally there were 22 teams in this league. In 1995, the number of teams in the league was 20, since FIFA thought that the number of matches should decrease. Today 20 teams are playing, and in 2007 the league changed the name to Premier League.

How is the Premier League played?

During the season, each team plays two games against each other. It happens through one on the road and one at home. A table keeps track of all the scores. A win gives 3 points, and a draw gives 1 point. Now you probably assume that a loss then means 0 points, and that is correct. If a situation arises that two teams have the same points in the table, they will look into the goal difference and then the number of goals scored.
In the Premier League, there is no playoff game, so the standings in the table are definitive when the season ends. The team with the most points wins and can also call themselves English champions.

Rank 1-4 in Premier League qualifies for the the Uefa Champions League

Teams that rank well in the Premier League are automatically placed in the Champions League. This applies to the teams that have positions 1-4 in the Premier League table, and they are given a ticket to the attractive and exciting Champions League.
A win in this league is, of course, the top win, but when all four teams get a ticket to Champions League, that is worth a lot of money. We think of television broadcasting and sponsors, and can be the difference between establishing them in the top positions in English football.

Bottom positions means relegation

In the Premier League, a place in the last three positions will result in relegation. Those teams will be transferred to what is called the top division of the Football League. They switch place with the top three from that league. There is no advantage has been in the Premier League for many years. If you end up at the bottom of the table, you will lose your place in the Premier League. Fulham FC got relegated in 2014. They had played in Premier League for 13 years.
The statistics say that teams that reach 40 points and over are safe from relegation. The team that has the bottom position during Christmas time has a death sentence on them.

Prize money for winning Premier League

There is a lot of money in this league. The teams are awarded based on their position in the table. The last position in the standings gets £1,9 million. Every position over that get an extra £1,9 million. So if you finish first, you will receive £36,1 million.
On top of that, the teams split an equal share of money consists of approximately £80 million. On top of that, they will also receive broadcasting income from TV, where they are guaranteed an amount of £12,3 million for ten games broadcasted. An additional £1,1 million will be on top of every extra televised TV match.

A small estimation of figures comes to the conclusion that teams ending up at the bottom of the table will be relegated, but they also make a profit of around £100 million.

Top teams produce well in Premier League

More money makes more success. That is the same in this League. With the prize money, you can strengthen the team to increase your position and earn more money. Top teams almost always stay in the top positions. Sure we have exceptions but in general.

Transfers of players

The more money you have as a team, the better players you can buy. Top players mean more possibilities to end up in rank one to four in the standings and final table. The transfer time for newly registered players is always interesting, and many clubs are signing new players on the last 24 hours of those transfer windows, making it a super interesting last 24-hour race until the window closes.
