Sevilla FC of Spain
The colours of Sevilla Football Club – the club of the upper class
Sevilla Fútbol Club is one of the two big teams in the capital of Andalusia. It maintains a historic and epic rivalry with the other team from the city of Seville, Real Betis Balompié. In fact, Sevilla FC and Real Betis are the only Andalusian soccer teams which have won all of the most prestigious national soccer competitions. That is to say, both teams have won the Spanish Cup and the Spanish First Division. In addition, the Sevillian teams are two of the ten teams that have been playing in the Spanish First Division for the longest time. So, they are considered two of the historic clubs of Spanish football and La Liga Santander. Sevilla and Betis face each other in the mythical Sevillian derby, known as El Gran Derbi.
History of Sevilla FC
The Sevilla Football Club was founded in 1890 by its first president, Edward Farquharson Johnston from the UK. But it wasn’t actually registered as a club until 1905. Of course, the game of soccer or football was introduced in the Andalusian capital by the large British colony that resided in Seville. Taking advantage of Burns Night in 1890, a few Spaniards and Brits decided to found a club that was in compliance with the rules of the FA in the UK. The main positions of the club were distributed among those who attended that first meeting. It was decided that the club was going to play football, not rugby.
The colours of Sevilla Football Club – the club of the upper class
The colours of Sevilla FC are red and white. But in its origins, the Sevilla players wore a white shirt, white shorts and black socks since these clothes were the easiest to find. But the founders of the club had a close relationship with the English city of Sunderland and therefore also with The Black Cats, that is, Sunderland AFC. Consequently, one of the managers ordered a complete kit from the Sunderland club and as we know, they wear red and white striped shirts.
Sevilla’s emblem
The club´s emblem is from 1921 and has a Swiss shape. At first, an emblem was considered in the shape of a Polish shield, already adopted by FC Barcelona, and another one with the Swiss shape. In the end the Swiss version was chosen. The emblem of Sevilla FC has three parts. In the upper left corner, we find the same three saints that appear on the coat of arms of the city of Seville since 1311: Saint Isidoro, Saint Fernando and Saint Leandro. To the right of the saints, we find the initials of the club: SFC. Below we find the red and white bars, and in the center, a soccer ball (the official ball of the 1938 World Cup in France).
The stadium of Sevilla FC – Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium
The Sevilla Fútbol Club stadium is located in the heart of the Nervión neighborhood in the city of Seville. It is named after Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, a Sevillian lawyer who was president of the club in two different stages (1932-1942 and 1948-1956).
The Sevillian club’s stadium was inaugurated on September 7, 1958 and the current capacity is 42,500 spectators, that is, considerably less than the stadium of its great rival, Real Betis (about 18,000 people less). Like the Benito Villamarín, the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium was one of the seventeen venues during the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982.
Famous players who played in Sevilla FC
I think we can easily say that Sevilla FC is one of the Big Five in La Liga Santander in Spain (along with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Valencia), due to their performance during recent years. And therefore, it is also one of the most important clubs in the world. So, you can already imagine that some amazing players have played at this Andalusian club.
Diego Armando Maradona
Yes, you have read it right. One of the greatest players of all time, Diego Armando Maradona, has played for Sevilla FC! It was during the season of 1992-93. His first game with the Sevillian club was on September 28, 1992, against Bayern Munich. It was a friendly game and Maradona’s friend Lothar Matthäus was playing for Bayern.
His time at Sevilla FC was quite turbulent and the club even hired a detective to try to keep him under control. Let´s say that the city of Seville invites to “mess around”, too much of a temptation for El Pelusa. Too many wet nights out for the Argentine genius and this greatly strained the relationship with the club’s board of directors. Maradona played a total of 26 games for Sevilla FC in La Liga and in these games, he scored 6 goals and provided 9 assists.
Davor Šuker
Another world star who played for Sevilla was the Croatian Davor Šuker. This great forward played a total of five seasons in the Andalusian capital, from 1991 to 1996. Davor Šuker played a total of 177 games for Sevilla and scored 90 goals. His best season was 1933-94 when he scored 27 goals in 41 games. He is one of the best Sevilla FC strikers of all time.
Anton Polster
The Austrian Cannon, Anton “Toni” Polster played for Sevilla FC in the Spanish La Liga for three seasons. He was very successful and managed to be the second best goal scorer in the Spanish Soccer League, after the legendary Real Madrid player Hugo Sánchez. Thanks to this, he won La Liga’s Silver Boot for that season. In addition, he almost won the Pichichi Trophy in 1990. Toni Polster played a total of 116 games for Sevilla and scored 56 goals.
Frédéric Kanouté
Frédéric Kanouté was born in France, but is from Mali, Africa. He was very successful at Sevilla FC, where he played seven seasons (2005-2012). Together with the Brazilian Luis Fabiano he formed a lethal duo in the Sevillian attack. Kanouté played a total of 290 games with the Blanquirrojos and scored 136 goals. With this, he is the foreign player with the most appearances and the most goals in the club from Seville. Frédéric Kanouté won six titles with Sevilla FC and was decisive in almost all of these titles.
The list of winners of the Nervionenses
We have already seen that Sevilla FC has an impressive track record. In fact, it is the team with the most regional, national and international titles in the city of Seville and in all of Andalusia. They have won one Spanish league trophy (runner-up four times), five Copas del Rey (Spanish Cup), one Spanish Super Cup, one European Super Cup and six UEFA Cups (four are Europa League).
Sevilla FC and the UEFA Europa League
Without a doubt, the greatest successes of the soccer club from Nervión have been in the UEFA Cup, currently called UEFA Europa League. In fact, it is the club that has won the most titles in this competition, with a total of six trophies. Sevilla won UEFA these seasons: 2005/06, 2006/07, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2019/20, a remarkable record. It is worth emphasizing that they won the Europa League three years in a row, impressive. Seville FC was voted the Best Club in the World in 2006 and 2007 (according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics).
