The European Football Championship will not be played until 2021
According to a statement from the Norwegian Football Association, UEFA has decided to postpone Euro 2020, a tournament also called the UEFA European Football Championship, for one year. Thus, the European Championship will only be played in 2021. This has just been announced after having a virtual meeting with the 55 European football associations.
The decision to postpone was expected
With Europe during a gigantic coronavirus crisis, the decision to postpone Euro 2020 was pretty much expected. For all major football leagues in Europe have been forced to cancel matches due to Covid-19. And therefore, there will be no time to finish the season before the Euro 2020 would have been played. The 16th edition of the European Football Championship would have started on June 12, 2020.
More time to finish La Liga, Serie A, Premier League, Bundesliga, etc.
With the postponement of the Euro 2020, there is time to solve the problem of the national leagues. Why is it so important to end these leagues? Well, because next year’s Champions League and Europa League are dependent on the rankings in these national leagues. So if they are not played, then it will be a huge mess for the next season.
European Championship – from June 11 to July 11
According to the Norwegian Football Association, the Euro 2020 will now be played from June 11 to July 11, 2021. It will, therefore, coincide for a few days with Ladies-EM in football 2021. This tournament will be played from July 7 to August 1, 2021, in England. The relocated football European Cup will also coincide with the U21 Euro Cup 2021 (U21 European Championship). It will be played on 13-27 June 2021 in Hungary and Slovenia as well as the final phase of the UEFA Nations League, which will also be played in June 2021 (we assume the later will be moved).
The decision to move the European Championship in football is final
There is still no official statement from UEFA, but the decision to postpone the football European Cup to 2021 is final. Therefore, it does not matter how the coronavirus crisis develops in the coming months; the European Championship will still play in 2021.
