From Elitserien to SHL

SHL was previously under the name Elitserien but changed its name to “Swedish hockey league – SHL” for the 2013/2014 season. The series plays from September to March, and then the playoffs are played where the winning team can lift the Le Mat Cup.

SHL before 1975

Until 1975, Swedish championships were played in ice hockey under completely different circumstances. The first championship took part in 1922. Two years earlier, the sport had been introduced in Sweden by the American Raoul Le Mat, who also named the trophy that is still at stake in SHL.

Between 1922-1975 the playoffs had varying designs and most often it was based on a playoff game from the various regional Allsvenskan series.

Most masters

The teams that have won the Swedish championship most often are Djurgårdens IF, Brynäs IF, Färjestad BK and IK Göta. If you only count SM titles since the start of the modern Elitserien in 1975, Färjestad BK has taken most titles followed by Djurgårdens IF and Brynäs IF.

The 2018/2019 season

When the 2018/2019 season ended, the series looked as follows:

  1. Färjestad
  2. Lulea
  3. Frölunda
  4. Djurgården
  5. Skelleftea
  6. Malmo
  7. Växjö
  8. HV71
  9. Rögle
  10. Orebro
  11. Brynäs
  12. Linköping
  13. Mora
  14. Timrå

SM finals

In the series, there are 14 teams that meet each other twice at home and twice away. With that, all teams meet with each other four times. The winners of the basic series collect a victory bonus of SEK 1 million and also get the advantage of playing at home in crucial playoff games.

When all 52 games are to end, it is time for the playoff round. The six best teams are directly qualified for the playoff round, which will contain a total of eight teams. The remaining two teams come from position seven to ten in the result table and will face each other in the best of three matches and thus bring out the two who go to the playoffs. Who meets who is determined by the placement in the result table. Place seven meets place ten, and place eight meets place nine.

Now eight teams are ready for the playoff round, which is carried out in the best of seven matches. Since the 2005/2006 season, the winner has been playing against the lowest placed, etc.
The quarterfinals begin, and the four teams that won their best of seven matches against their opponents advance to the semifinals. Here, another best of seven matches take place between the teams, and now we have two teams that will meet each other in another seven games. Whoever wins that battle is the one who becomes the winner of SHL.

Rash and qualms

For the teams that finish in place 13 and 14 in the series, direct qualification awaits against the winners in the Hockey Allsvenskan. These matches in the direct selection are played best by seven matches.

It can be easy to lose the bet on these odds as you surely want to maximize the odds and place it as early as possible. In this bet, it is important to find the best opportunity and not to put too much effort in comparison to chances. If you have a good look at the teams, you can certainly get extra profit on this bet.
